As part of Southbank Centre’s The Rest Is Noise festival, BBC Concert Orchestra captures the spirit of 1940s wartime Britain in a concert that celebrates the role of BBC Radio and British cinema.
Conductor Keith Lockhart guides BBC Concert Orchestra through the films and broadcasts that helped stoke the nation’s home fires, from the morale boosting music of BBC Radio broadcasts to the rousing scores of some of Britain’s finest propaganda films.
Initially described as ‘popularly noted, but deplored’ by the BBC Board of Governors, Vera Lynn and Sincerely Yours went on to win the heart of a nation at home and abroad. BBC Concert Orchestra performs ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and ‘White Cliffs of Dover’, two of the songs made famous by ‘The Forces’ Sweetheart’ and which epitomised the mood of the time. The orchestra also puts the spotlight on another BBC Radio programme, Music While You Work, which broadcast upbeat music twice a day throughout the war to keep factory workers motivated.
Clifton Parker’s score from the film Western Approaches, often credited as one of the most influential propaganda films ever made, and Richard Addinsell’s Warsaw Concerto for the film Dangerous Moonlight, highlight the important role British cinema played during the war, and the evening ends with Henry V – A Shakespeare Scenario a 50 minute music and narration recreation of Walton’s music from the film that starred Laurence Olivier and was dedicated to ‘Commandos and Airborne Troops of Great Britain, the spirit of whose ancestors it has been humbly attempted to recapture.’
